Japan has been closing rural schools for many years due to continuous depopulation in rural areas. Sad as it is, there is still some hope in places where the communities have worked hard not to let these beautiful schools completely disappear.
日本では長年にわたり、農村部の過疎化が続いているため、地方の学校が閉鎖されてきました。悲しいことですが、地域住民が美しい学校を完全に消滅させないために尽力してきた場所には、まだ希望が残されています。
In Kyotamba, a 30 minute drive from Casa Miyama, you will find the Shitsumi Elementary school. This school was built in 1960 and it finally closed in 2011. Not even a year had pass since its closure, when the local residents decided to manage the place themselves as a way of keeping its memory alive.
カーサ美山から車で30分ほどの京丹波町には、質美小学校があります。この学校は1960年に建てられ、2011年に閉校しました。そして閉校から1年も経たないうちに、地元住民が学校の記憶を後世に伝えるため、自ら管理することを決意しました。
Entering an old school always brings you memories, even if it wasn’t your old school. Schools have the power to awake our childhood times, our first dearest friends, our most beloved teachers and basically the walls that contained our whole world at that time.
In the case of Japan, old schools hold an extra special charm because most of these buildings where build with wood, or used a lot of wood in their interiors, which is the case of the Shitsumi Elementary school. Here the building is made of bricks and concrete but the interior has wooden floorings, wooden doors and windows and even some old chairs and desks.
古い学校に足を踏み入れると、たとえ自分の母校でなくても、必ず思い出が蘇るものです。学校には幼い頃の思い出、初めてできた親友、最も愛した先生、そして当時の私たちの世界そのものを包み込んでいた壁など、様々な記憶を呼び覚ます力があります。
特に日本の古い学校は特別な魅力を放っています。なぜなら、これらの建物の多くは木造で建てられていたり、内装に木材をふんだんに使っていたりするからです。質美小学校もまさにその典型です。この建物の外観はレンガとコンクリート造りですが、内部は木製の床、木製のドアと窓、そして古い椅子や机までが残っています。
To enter the building, even nowadays, and because you are in Japan, you are kindly asked to leave your shoes at the shoe box in the entrance. For foreigners this is a shock, at least for me. In Spain the only place where you would take of your shoes in school would be to enter the gym area, the only one that actually had flooring on it. Nowadays I bet not even that happens anymore! Here you will find sleepers to walk around the building, especially useful in winter when the floor is really cold. Remember, the school is surrounded by hills and greenery everywhere. It might even snow in winter sometimes!
ここは日本なので、廃校の今でも、建物に入るには玄関の靴箱に靴を脱ぐようにお願いされます。外国人にとっては、少なくとも私にとっては衝撃でした。スペインでは、学校で靴を脱ぐのは体育館に入る時だけでした。体育館だけが木の床が敷いてあったからです。スペインでは今ではそれすらもなくなってしまいましたけど。質美小学校の建物内にはスリッパに履き替えて校内に入ります。
Anyway, what will you find here besides an old school with its blackboards and its chalk?
First of all, a beautiful children’s bookstore, with such a great collection of curated books that even adults like me will end up buying more than one. Ms Tani was actually the first person who thought of opening a shop in this old school, and what could be better than a children’s bookstore in an old elementary school? I do really admire her. She is so welcoming and has such a great taste for books and toys! Also, next door to the bookstore you will find the “Kinoko Bunko Asobi no Hiroba”, a place where children can play with toys and even borrow books.
さて、黒板とチョークのある古い教室以外に、ここには何があるのでしょうか？
まず、素敵な児童書専門店があります。厳選された素晴らしい本がたくさん揃っていて、私のような大人でもついつい何冊も買ってしまいます。谷さんは実はこの古い校舎にお店を開こうと最初に考えた方で、古い小学校に児童書屋さんを開くなんて、まさにうってつけのアイデアですよね！本当に尊敬してしまいます。とても親しみやすく、本や雑貨のセンスも抜群なんです！お店の隣には「きのこ文庫 遊びの広場」があり、子どもたちが遊んだり、本を借りたりできる場所です。
The other super popular spot is the Pandozo Café which serves delicious pizza cooked with wood and pasta with different sauces and toppings as well as original drinks and softcream. Mr Hosomi decided to open his restaurant here because of the nostalgia clients could feel while having lunch in an old classroom while looking at the school garden from the window. High quality ingredients are used in his pizzas that cooks himself daily. Very much recommended! I had the Bismarck white pizza with delicious bacon, cheese and egg!
もう一つ大人気なのが「パンドーゾカフェ」。薪窯で焼いた美味しいピザや、様々なソースとトッピングのパスタ、オリジナルドリンクやソフトクリームなどが楽しめます。細見さんがこの場所にお店を開いたのは、古い教室でランチをしながら窓から校庭を眺めることで、お客さんが懐かしい気持ちになれると思ったからだそうです。ピザは厳選された食材を使用し、毎日手作りしています。本当におすすめです！私はベーコン、チーズ、卵がたっぷり乗ったビスマルクホワイトピザをいただきました！
Other shops located in different classrooms are:
- Kissaten Shizuku owned by Ms Yamauchi and serving drip coffee as well as cakes, and eventually organizing exhibitions and events.
- Que Sera Sera Antique Shop owned by Sawada San offers Showa era goods, with a very much retro atmosphere, and with a lot of charm. Step into the past and buy an old lamp, or an old cookie box, why not?
教室を改装した他のショップは以下の通りです。
山内さんが経営する喫茶店「雫」では、ドリップコーヒーやケーキを提供しており、展示会やイベントも開催するそうです。
澤田さんが経営する「ケセラセラ・アンティークショップ」では、昭和時代の品々を取り扱っており、レトロな雰囲気と魅力にあふれています。昔のランプやクッキーの箱など、懐かしい品々を探してみてはいかがでしょうか？
Other empty classrooms like the kitchen or the first grade classroom are kept in its original form and are available for rent to do any kind of activity, from art to cooking, or even building your first piece of furniture.
キッチンや小学校1年生の教室など、空き教室は当時のままの状態で保存されており、アートや料理、初めての家具作りなど、様々なアクティビティに利用できます。
If you are spending a couple of days either in Casa Miyama or Koya Miyama and you are looking for a half day activity or place to go or have lunch, and you love the old times, the nostalgic atmosphere and the nature, the Shitsumi Elementary school is a nice drive and a whole experience in its own!
