Looking at the green mountains and blue sky through a huge high glass window, I am sitting on a table with my favorite cinnamon roll and homemade ume (Japanese plum) juice. Here is one of my favorite places to have a break in Miyama, Putpukudo, a tinny bakery café in Miyama.

Run by a Japanese couple, Waka Kamiya and Koji Sato, Putpukudo became an oasis for visitors as well as local people in Miyama since they opened in 2022. They bake fresh bread every Friday, Saturday and Sunday morning and grind the coffee right there after you order it. If you are not a coffee lover don’t worry. They also serve homemade plum juice, homemade ginger ale as well as different types of tea.

Waka-chan, born and raised in Shizuoka, moved to Kyoto when she entered university. During her studies, she met with his partner, Sato san. After university she found a job for a company in Kyoto but her passion to explore the world led her to various countries, and one of her favorites destinations was Spain. She learned Spanish and even flamenco!! Later she fell in love with the art of baking bread and she mastered it in Shizuoka. While she was working for a company in Kyoto, she started opening a bakery stand in weekend markets in Kyoto. On the other hand, her partner, Koji san, sound engineer, started looking for a rural area to live. He moved to a deep mountain area of Shiga prefecture. Waka-chan often visited him in the mountain, slowly starting to taste the rural world. Soon, Waka-chan began to like the rural life, and dreamed about growing her own vegetables, harvesting the organic wheat to make bread.

They had friends in Miyama and so, every once in a while, they had visited Miyama. “Miyama is very rural but compared to where I lived, it feels almost like a town!” Koji said. “We decided to come down to a more realistic rural place like Miyama, from a deep mountain in Shiga.”

They started to grow their own vegetables and rice by themselves as they started their new life in Miyama 11 years ago. Waka also worked in an organic farm for a while, until Covid came and the farm actually had to close down. Nowadays they keep growing their own vegetables, rice and flour.

Then, one day, someone told them that there is a house that they can rent to do a cafe near where they live. “Actually, my hobby was to roast coffee”, Koji said.  And Waka-chan said, “I always wanted to have my own bakery”. It was their destiny. They opened “Putpukudo” in 2022.

Putpukudo is open from Friday to Sunday, as well as holidays, from 11am to 6 pm. They serve a good selection of coffee roasted by Koji as well as Waka’s daily baked bread. They don’t serve real lunch but you can have a small pizza bread or a sandwich anytime throughout the day. And of course, an afternoon tea break with sweet bread like my favorite cinnamon roll! (My husband’s favorite is their ampan.) Putpukudo’s best seller is their famous Pan du Campagne, prepared with their own organic flour, from the wheat that they harvest on their own.

Oh well, I stayed too long today. It’s time to go. I said to her “Mata-ne” and she replied back “Muchas gracias!”. I speak Japanese to her and she speaks Spanish to me. That is how we speak in Putpukudo.

When I asked them if they think they will live all their life here, their answer was uncertain. Who knows! But, for now it works! I just hope they stay open for a long time!

Viva (long life) Putpukudo!!
