People keep asking me which is the best season to visit Miyama. And I still haven’t sorted it out, but definitely one of my favorites is autumn, no doubt! However, red leaves season in central Japan is quite late, so don’t make the mistake of coming too early. Check the dates according to your destination, and remember: climate change is driving nature crazy so nothing is as predictable as it used to be.
美山を訪れるのに最適な季節はいつかとよく聞かれるのですが、私自身まだ決めかねています。でも、間違いなく秋は一番好きな季節の一つです！ただし、日本の中心部では紅葉の見頃が11月後半とかなり遅いので、秋と言えども早すぎる時期に訪れるのは避けた方が良いでしょう。目的地に合わせて時期を確認し、気候変動の影響で自然環境は予測不可能になっていることに気をつけてくださいね。
In the case of Miyama, where nights are colder than Kyoto city, the best dates are around the 10th of November to the 25th of November, approximately. I would say that in recent years the momiji peak is closer to the 18th or a bit later. However, nature is unpredictable so this is just for you to have an approximate idea. Whether you catch the peak or not is a matter of good luck!
京都よりも夜間の気温が低い美山の場合、紅葉の見頃は11月10日頃から25日頃までです。近年は紅葉のピークが18日頃、あるいは少し遅くなっているように感じます。しかし、自然は予測不可能なので、これはあくまで目安です。ピークに間に合うかどうかは運次第です！
The good thing about Autumn leaves compared to Sakura season is that the leaves don’t fall off the trees as fast as the cherry blossom flowers, so the possibility of enjoying a beautiful scenery is much higher for a longer amount of days. Plus, in the case of momiji leaves (japanese maple), being these ones the most amazing of all, the gradation from the green to magic red goes through many stages. Light green green, yellow, orange and intense red can be found in one same tree at the same time, which is just shocking.
桜と比べて紅葉の良い点は、桜のようにすぐに散ってしまうわけではないので、より長い期間美しい景色を楽しめる可能性が高いことです。さらに、紅葉の中でも特に美しいモミジの葉は、緑から幻想的な赤へと幾段階ものグラデーションを見せてくれます。淡い緑、黄色、オレンジ、そして鮮やかな赤が、同じ木の中で同時に見られることもあり、色様ざなその姿はまさに圧巻です。
I am from Barcelona and autumn in our mountain areas grades from green to yellow and finally brown, some leaves will reach a red tone but not many. So Autumn in Japan can be compared to the beauty of Autumn leaves in Canada or the States in terms of tonalities and color intensity but not in terms of shapes. Japanese maple leaves are usually very tinny and their shape is beautiful. Another amazing Japanese tree in Autumn is the ginko. Its yellow beautifully shaped leaves turn the ground around them into a magnificent yellow natural carpet.
私はバルセロナ出身ですが、バルセロナ地方の山間部での秋は、緑から黄色そして最後に茶色へと変化し、赤みを帯びる葉はそれほど多くはありません。日本の燃えるような秋の紅葉は、カナダやアメリカの紅葉にもあるかもしれませんが、形という点では異なります。モミジの葉は通常とても小さく、その繊細さがとても美しいのです。秋に美しい日本の木といえば、イチョウも挙げられます。黄色く美しい形の葉が、周囲の地面を壮大な黄色の自然の絨毯に変えてくれます。
While in Kyoto there are crazy crowds everywhere during Autumn peak season, Miyama is extremely quiet. You might find some locals enjoying the area on weekends but during the weekdays you could very easily find yourself alone strolling around the mystic amazing surroundings. Another activity we really recommend is buying a lunch box and having lunch under red leaves either at Ono park or by the river in some of the multiple points where you can go down and sit close to the crystal water.
京都市内では秋のピークシーズンにはどこもかしこも人でごった返しますが、美山は驚くほど静かです。週末には地元の人々が散策を楽しんでいる姿を見かけるかもしれませんが、平日は神秘的で素晴らしい景色の中を、誰にも邪魔されずにゆっくりと散策できるでしょう。お弁当を買って、大野公園や川沿いのあちこちにあるポイントで、紅葉の下でランチを楽しではいかがでしょうか。川沿いには、水辺に降りて澄んだ水辺に腰掛けられるスポットがいくつもありますよ。
For those who have a drone and would like to fly it to capture the magic of this season, Miyama is perfect, since there are not many restrictions to fly your drone and wonderful sceneries are found in every corner. What you will find here is raw beauty. While the trees in Kyoto are thoughtfully planted, in Miyama there are plenty of wild momijis spread all over its hills, making the experience even better. You might find that autumn mountain of Arashiyama has nothing to compare to that of Miyama. It is very recommended to fly your drone in the early morning with morning mist. またドローンをお持ちで、この季節の魔法のような景色を撮影したい方にとっても美山は最高の場所です。ドローンの飛行に関する規制は少なく、至る所に素晴らしい景色が広がっています。京都市内の木々は丁寧に植えられていますが、美山には丘陵地帯に野生の紅葉が数多く自生しており、その景色は格別です。ありのままの自然の美しさに出会えるでしょう。京都嵐山がちっぽけに思えるかもしれません。朝靄のかかった早朝にドローンを飛ばすのがおすすめです。下の写真は早朝にカーサ美山から飛ばしたドローンで撮影された紅葉した山々です。
For those of you who would like to experience Miyama in autumn but don’t want to rent a car nor drive, we recommend you to book your stay with us at MIYAMA STAY (Casa Miyama or Koya Miyama). If you stay in Casa Miyama and choose our Miyama Kayabuki tour plan, in autumn we add some autumn leaves spots such as Chii neighborhood or Ono Dam to the visit of Kayabuki no Sato.

カーサ美山にご宿泊されますと、ツアーの後はカーサ美山の日本庭園を望む露天風呂でゆったりとおくつろぎいただけます。もちろん、庭園には数体の紅葉が植えられていますので湯船から紅葉を堪能していただけます。
Another great way to discover Miyama during this season is cycling around. To do so, if you are only two, you can use the bicycles we provide at Casa Miyama, or if you prefer electric bicycle you can rent them at the tourist office in Miyama. Since Miyama is quite a big area and you won’t be able to cycle it all in one day unless you are a professional, we recommend to use our bikes if go from Casa Miyama towards Ono Dam area. It would take about one hour for one way. If, instead, you would like to visit Kayabuki no Sato and the Chii area then we would recommend you to rent the electric bikes at the Miyama Tourist Office. Prices are very reasonable, but there are not many bicycles available so you should book them in advance through their website. We can drop you off there if you don’t have a car.
November is the busiest season at Miyama Stay (Casa Miyama and Koya Miyama) so book with some time in advance once you know your preferred dates!

この時期に美山を満喫するもう一つの素晴らしい方法は、サイクリングです。お二人様の場合は、CASA MIYAMAでもKOYA MIYAMAでも、ご用意している自転車を無料でご利用いただけます。電動自転車をご希望の場合は、美山観光案内所でレンタルすることができます。美山はかなり広いため、プロのサイクリストでない限り一日で全てを巡るのは難しいでしょう。カーサ美山から大野ダム方面へ向かう場合は、カーサ美山の自転車のご利用をお勧めします。片道1時間ぐらいかかります。かやぶきの里や知井方面へお越しになる場合は、美山観光案内所で電動自転車をレンタルされることをお勧めします。料金は非常にリーズナブルですが、自転車の台数に限りがあるため、ウェブサイトから事前にご予約ください。お車をお持ちでない場合は、観光案内所までお送りいたします。
11月は美山ステイ（CASA MIYAMAとKOYA MIYAMA）にとって最も混み合うシーズンですので、ご希望の日程が決まれば、お早めにご予約ください！
