Miyama is known for being, still nowadays, quite an untouched rural village in the Kyoto prefecture. And as such, it still keeps alive a few rare rural festivals that have been passed from generation to generation. Summer is usually one of the seasons with more festivals all over Japan. And so is the case in Miyama.
京都府の美山町は、今もなお手つかずの自然が残る田園地帯として知られています。そのため、代々受け継がれてきた貴重な地方の祭りが今もなお数多く残っています。夏は日本全国で祭りが盛んになる季節の一つですが、美山町も例外ではありません。
I moved to Miyama in 2019 and since then I have attended to quite a few festivals, but still have not photographed all of them. Agematsu festival for me was kind of a surprise, specially the second time I attended. The first year it was a bit of a disappointment. I didn’t choose a good location or a good point of view. It was too far, too dark, and it wasn’t a good year. But my second experience was great, so now I do really recommend coming to Miyama at the end of August to enjoy this traditional small tiny festival held among villagers for the villagers.
There are quite a few fire festivals held all over the country, most of them related to praise for good harvest, to avoid mountain fires and so on. In this case, Agematsu is related to the Atago faith, and its main goal is to pray for not having fires in the forest.
私は2019年に美山町に引っ越してきて以来、数多くの祭りに参加してきましたが、まだすべてを写真に収めることはできていません。中でも上松祭りは、特に2回目の参加は私にとって嬉しい驚きでした。1回目は少し残念な結果に終わりました。撮影場所やアングルが悪かったのです。遠すぎたり、暗すぎたり、とにかく良い写真が撮れませんでした。しかし、2回目の体験は素晴らしかったので、8月末に美山町を訪れて、村人たちが村人たちのために行うこの伝統的な小さな祭りをぜひ体験してみてほしいと心からお勧めします。
全国各地で数多くの火祭りが行われており、その多くは豊作を祈願したり、山火事を防いだりといった目的で行われます。この上松は愛宕信仰に由来し、主な目的は森林火災の防止を祈願することです。
The day before, the villagers plant a pillar with a hamper at the very top. The day of the festival, in the evening, all the villagers gather together and the young men prepare pine torches, they light them up on fire and throw them to the hamper tighten with a rope. The first torch that enters in the hamper will burn the whole hamper and the pillar will fall on fire. To avoid the pillar to fall in a bad direction, villagers hold it with ropes and force it to fall where they think it is better. The truth is that it is quite wild when the whole thing goes on fire.
What do I mean when I say “it wasn’t a good year?”. Well things can go either very fast and the festival might finish in 5 minutes (that happens when one of the participants happen to throw the torch inside the hampers at the very beginning), or it might take forever and eventually the festival might end without achieving the goal (that happens when non of the participants are able to throw the torch inside the hampers). Non of these two situations is ideal or much fun. But you never know how things are going to turn out, so you must go and see it by yourself!
So, my second year happened to be perfect. Basically, they accomplished their goal about 20 minutes after the beginning of the festival, which is actually perfect. Not too long, not too short and perfect weather conditions!
前日、村人たちは柱を立て、その頂上に籠を載せます。祭りの当日、夕方になると村人たちが集まり、若者たちが松明を用意し、火をつけて、縄で縛った籠に向かって投げます。最初に籠に入った松明は籠全体に燃え移り、柱は炎に包まれます。柱が倒れる方向が悪くなるのを防ぐため、村人たちは縄で柱を支え、倒れやすいと思われる場所に倒します。実際、火が燃え上がる様子はまさに圧巻です。
「今年は不作だった」とはどういう意味でしょうか？物事はあっという間に進むこともあれば、5分で祭りが終わってしまうこともあります（参加者の誰かが開始直後にたまたまトーチをかごの中に投げ入れた場合）。あるいは、いつまでも終わらず、結局目的を達成できないまま祭りが終わってしまうこともあります（参加者の誰もかごの中にトーチを投げ入れられなかった場合）。どちらの状況も理想的とは言えず、あまり楽しいものでもありません。でも、どうなるかは誰にもわからないので、実際に自分の目で確かめてみるしかないのです！
さて、2年目の私の体験はまさに完璧でした。祭り開始から約20分後に目的を達成したのですが、これはまさに理想的でした。長すぎず短すぎず、天気も最高でした！
It was a clear night, with beautiful dark blue sky, not much wind, and when the hamper went on fire it just fell down to the ground in a great direction so I could take a picture I am very proud of! That is the other thing, it is not easy to take a good picture either!
Photography tip: If you want to take a cool picture of this festival, the first thing you need is a tripod. And the second is a slow shutter speed. And third a bit of good luck!
If you come to Miyama and decide staying in one of our two houses, we will take you to the festival if you like. The festival is held in three different locations in Tsurugaoka, our area. All of them are no more than 10 minutes ride by car.

If you have never seen a fire festival in Japan, don’t hesitate! It is a cool experience for sure!
澄み切った夜空には美しい濃い青空が広がり、風もほとんどありませんでした。かごに火がついた時、ちょうど良い方向に地面に落ちたので、とても自慢できる写真を撮ることができました！ちなみに、良い写真を撮るのも簡単ではありません！
写真撮影のヒント：このお祭りの素敵な写真を撮りたいなら、まず三脚が必要です。次に、シャッタースピードを遅く設定しましょう。そして最後に、少しの幸運を！
美山にお越しになり、当館の2軒のコテージのいずれかにご宿泊される場合、ご希望であればお祭りへご案内いたします。お祭りは当館のある鶴岡の3か所で開催されます。いずれも車で10分以内です。
